This ½ mile loop is flat, and open to biking, hiking, walking, and dog-walking (with the dog and owner attached by a leash, of course). There is parking at the trailhead at the end of Hunting Cove Place (map at http://www.pwcparks.org/pdf/trail_broadrun.pdf ) Start at the trailhead: Trail route is obvious, even though the white blazes on trees - the old trail markers - are wearing away. Go 100 or so yards, then turn right just after you see the modern trail sign. If you get to the second sign, you went too far. There is no bridge to cross Broad Run. Turn left to follow Broad Run Trail downstream. Don’t forget to sneak a peek at the stream. It’s worth navigating through the brush to check out the reflections. After several hundred yards, turn left at the wooden walkway. There is a wooden signboard marking the trail junction, but there may not be any signs on it. No need to hurry – trail is eazzy peazzy.

The construction of the trail is finished from Belmont Bay to Dawson Beach Road, next to Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The small brick “contact station” at the refuge entrance has been removed, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service is continuing to build its new headquarters building on the ridge nearby. Some of the PHNST has been completed south to Veterans Park, but a heavy rainstorm in September revealed that an engineering/design challenge remains. Look for a grand opening in Spring 2021. In the meantime, there’s more about the trail within Prince William County– and check out the video .

With over 100 miles of trails throughout the Greater Prince William County (Va.) where does the new walker and hiker begin? One local club may have a good place for you to start. After all as the Commonwealth's newest state motto says, "Virginia Is for Walking Lovers." "Volksmarching" or "people's walking" is a non-competitive social walking and biking activity that is hosted nationally by the American Volkssport Association which is also known now as "America's Walking Club." Started in 1976, the local club, the Wood and Dale Wanderers is one of over 200 in the USA. This year the club is celebrating its 35th anniversary as Prince William County's host for trail walking. The club has 5 and 10 kilometer routes picked out in throughout the county. Using the existing trails in Locus Shade County Park, in Leesylvania State Park, and in the Prince William Forest Park (National Park Service), there are trail paths that accommodate all ages and abilities.
